Which languages are available in the system are defined in System.properties file. Configuring language settings in the System.properties file, the following properties are set:
Default system language — is defined by the “language” parameter and corresponding language value. This parameter is global language setting for the system. Specified language will be applied when “Default” is selected as Language value in Site Edit and User configuration. The specified default language will also be applied when previously specified language is removed from the list of active languages. If no other value is specified, or the parameter is not specified in System.properties file, English is a default system language.
Active languages — are defined by the “languages.active” parameter with comma-separated list of language values. Active languages is a list of languages that will be available for selection in Site Edit and User configuration. The following table lists all the languages that can be currently used in our system.

Translatable languages — list of languages for which translations can be entered in Translator application. Other active languages that are not specified as translatable will be available in Translator in a “read-only” mode, meaning that Translator users will only be able to search and view translations for non-translatable languages, but not change them. List of translatable languages is defined by the “languages.translatable” parameter.
Translation file — file that is used by the system as a source of translations for user interface labels. By default, the following system translation file is used: ../WEB-INF/properties/translator_export.xml. By the useDefaultTranslation parameter it is possible to configure the system to use alternative translation file. Alternative translation file can be made by setting useDefaultTranslation=false used when there is a need to enter and store translations for a set of languages without making changes to the default translation file
Please note the following:
Alternative translation file should be created in the same directory as default translation file, namely, in ../WEB-INF/propertiesAlternative translation file format should be translation_XX_XX.xml. Where X-es specify country codes
Even if the system is configured to use alternative translation file, translations for user interface labels are actually read from 2 translation files: alternative translation file and default translation file. This means that translations in alternative translation files have higher priority, but if no translation for a label is found in alternative file, the system will display translation from the default translation file. Otherwise “Nerd” value will be displayed.
